The technology that helped dairy farmers produce more and better milk was the milking machine. It took a farmer about ten minutes to milk a cow by hand. Each cow had to be milked two times a day. As farmers started to increase their herds, it took more and more time to milk the cows. Early milking machines were invented in the 1870s and continued to improve into the 1900s. Modern milking machines now use computers to keep track of when cows are milked and how much milk they produce!
